Israel & Solel’s Youth

by Arliene Botnick, January 29, 2016

Two of our teens (both graduates of Bet Sefer Solel & dedicated teachers at our school) Sonja & Veronica Botnick will be travelling to Israel, joining the NFTY-EIE High School in Israel Spring 2016 semester. They are part of a group of 63 exceptional young adults from all across North America who have chosen to study for one semester in Israel.

What an amazing opportunity! How fortunate are we to have been part of what has given these young women their love of Israel. As well, our Shul and School will benefit greatly from what the girls will experience and learn. When they return in the spring, they will continue their teaching at Bet Sefer Solel, and will become future Jewish leaders.

Veronica & Sonja will be immersed in Judaica & Hebrew studies while also receiving credits that can be applied to their Grade 11 High School requirements. They will form bonds with both Israeli teens and the other North American teens in this programme. Both these friendships and this wealth of experience and knowledge are invaluable. We wish Sonja and Veronica a safe and fruitful and most enjoyable time in Israel and we look forward to their return and their ongoing contribution to our Jewish community.

We also have, as in the past, several slightly older young adults who have asked to be and have been placed on the VIP roster for the Spring Birthright trip. Through some very generous benefactors, hundreds of young Jewish adults between the ages of 18 – 26 have been accepted to Birthright on a two week trip that nourishes their Jewish souls (as well as, it appears, forms some “shidachs”!)

We can show our love and support for Israel in many ways (financially, studying, travelling) We care deeply about what is happening there and we are obligated to speak out when what is happening is contradictory to Jewish values. But Israel is our homeland and we should take great pride in our young adults who are fulfilling the words we recite at each and every service in our Prayer for Israel.

Plant the love of Zion into our hearts, that our footsteps may race to walk upon Israel.
